Workshop 2025
(hybrid format)

Population Genomics

September 15 - 19, 2025

Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), Porto Alegre, RS - Brazil & Online via Zoom

This workshop will be an intermediate-level theoretical and practical course in Population Genomics, covering fundamental concepts of population genetics, genomic diversity, and adaptation. Over five days, participants will attend lectures by GenoTropics PIs, theoretical classes with expert instructors, and hands-on sessions using tutorials focused on whole-genome analysis. The workshop also aims to encourage the exchange of experiences through participant presentations and discussions on the application of methods in evolutionary and conservation contexts.

Program Summary

(Detailed program will be added later)

15/09 – Foundations and Practical Introduction
Introduction to population genetics and bioinformatics applied to population genomics, with hands-on activities to become familiar with tools, genomic data, and initial processing (mapping and SNP calling).

16/09 – Genomic Diversity
Theoretical discussion and practical tutorials on genomic diversity, focusing on heterozygosity, SNP density, and runs of homozygosity, and their applications in evolution and conservation.

17/09 – Population Structure
Study of concepts and methods used to estimate population structure, with a focus on PCA and Admixture, through lectures and practical exercises.

18/09 – Differentiation and Adaptation
Exploration of methods to estimate population differentiation and identify signatures of natural selection, using both theoretical and applied genomic approaches.

19/09 – Wrap-up
General discussion about the course, evaluation of activities, and suggestions for future editions.
